Trigger finger and tendon disorders are conditions that affect the tendons in the fingers and hands, leading to pain, stiffness, and difficulty in movement. Trigger finger, medically known as stenosing tenosynovitis, occurs when the tendon in the finger becomes inflamed and forms a nodule, making it difficult for the finger to straighten. As the tendon becomes restricted, it may cause the finger to “catch” or “snap,” leading to a sensation of locking or popping. This condition is most common in individuals who repeatedly use their hands, such as in certain occupations or sports, and it can also be associated with underlying conditions like diabetes or rheumatoid arthritis.
Tendon disorders, including tendinitis and tendinosis, occur when the tendons that connect muscles to bones become inflamed or damaged. Tendinitis typically results from overuse or repetitive movements, leading to swelling and discomfort in the affected area. Tendinosis, on the other hand, is a chronic condition characterized by degenerative changes in the tendon due to long-term overuse or injury. Both conditions can cause pain, tenderness, and limited mobility, significantly impacting daily activities and hand function.
Treatment for trigger finger and tendon disorders begins with conservative measures such as rest, splinting, anti-inflammatory medications, and physical therapy. Stretching exercises can help relieve tension and improve the flexibility of the tendons. Corticosteroid injections may also be used to reduce inflammation and alleviate pain. In severe or persistent cases where non-surgical treatments are ineffective, surgical intervention may be considered. Trigger finger surgery typically involves releasing the constricted tendon, allowing for smoother motion. For tendon injuries, surgical repair may be necessary to restore proper tendon function. With appropriate care, most individuals can recover fully and regain normal hand function.
