Knee pain is a common issue that affects people of all ages and activity levels, often leading to discomfort, limited mobility, and a decreased quality of life. The knee joint is complex, consisting of bones, ligaments, tendons, and cartilage, all of which can be prone to injury or degeneration. Knee pain can be caused by a wide range of conditions, including osteoarthritis, ligament injuries, meniscus tears, patellar tendinitis, and bursitis. The management of knee pain typically begins with an accurate diagnosis, followed by a tailored treatment plan aimed at reducing pain, restoring function, and preventing further damage to the joint.
Non-surgical treatments are often the first line of defense for knee pain management. Physical therapy plays a crucial role in strengthening the muscles surrounding the knee, improving flexibility, and enhancing joint stability. Targeted exercises and stretches can alleviate pain and prevent further injury. For more immediate relief, treatments such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), corticosteroid injections, and hyaluronic acid injections can help reduce inflammation, swelling, and discomfort. Hyaluronic acid injections act as a lubricant within the joint, helping to reduce friction and improve mobility, particularly for individuals with osteoarthritis. These injections can provide lasting relief and delay the need for surgical intervention.
For patients who do not experience sufficient relief from conservative treatments, more advanced therapies such as platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy or stem cell therapy may be considered. PRP therapy utilizes the patient’s own blood, concentrating the platelets and growth factors to promote healing and tissue repair in the knee joint. Stem cell therapy, which involves injecting stem cells into the knee joint, has the potential to regenerate damaged cartilage and reduce inflammation, offering a more natural approach to healing. These regenerative treatments have shown promising results in alleviating pain and improving joint function, especially in cases of early-stage osteoarthritis or ligament injuries. If conservative treatments fail, knee surgery options such as arthroscopy or knee replacement surgery may be considered as a last resort.
